Mentoring Matters: how real connections fuel leadership growth

At the Institute of Managers and Leaders, our award-winning mentoring program continues to support and shape the journeys of both emerging leaders and experienced mentors across our community.

Two strong advocates of the program, Megan Saw MIML, Senior Portfolio Analyst at Toyota Motor Corporation and Gopal Ponnusamy CPMgr CMgr MIML, Plant Manager at Emerson share their perspectives on the value of mentoring and the impact it can have at every stage of a leadership journey.

Mentoring as a catalyst for growth: Megan Saw’s story

For Megan, mentoring has been a powerful experience that reshaped how she approaches challenge and uncertainty. Her mentor helped her “reframe challenges as opportunities for growth” and encouraged her to approach uncertainty with “curiosity and resilience,” accelerating both her confidence and readiness for leadership.

“The program has given me confidence by showing that leadership is a journey, not a destination,” Megan reflects. Through regular mentoring conversations, and by learning from her mentor’s achievements and setbacks, she gained clarity on the type of leader she aspires to be and the practical ways to start demonstrating those qualities now. That sense of direction has left her feeling more prepared for future opportunities.

For those considering the program, Megan’s advice is clear: “The program is a safe space to ask questions, explore ideas, and learn from someone who has walked the path before you. Your mentor will help guide you toward practical steps that align with your goals… It will contribute to shaping how you lead, think and grow even after the program ends.”

The Mentor’s perspective: Gopal Ponnusamy on giving back

For Gopal, the decision to become a mentor was driven by a desire to give back and support others, just as he was supported earlier in his own leadership journey. Over time, mentoring has shaped his leadership in unexpected ways. “Mentoring has been incredibly fulfilling for me,” he says, noting how it has strengthened his listening skills, sharpened his questioning, and broadened his perspective.

Trust sits at the centre of Gopal’s mentoring approach. “I establish trust by remaining fully engaged, listening impartially, and demonstrating genuine interest in my mentee’s objectives and challenges,” he explains. By openly sharing experiences, including setbacks, he creates an environment where conversations are authentic, reflective and grounded in mutual respect.

Gopal believes mentoring plays a critical role in sustaining leadership capability because it goes beyond structured learning. “Mentoring greatly enhances leadership by blending advice with genuine connection, thoughtful reflection, and practical wisdom,” he says. With individualised, ongoing support, emerging leaders grow not only in skill, but in confidence, resilience and their ability to create positive impact.

A call to reflect and take the next step

Mentoring remains one of the most powerful ways to support leadership growth –  creating space for reflection, challenge and connection at every stage of a career.

Whether you are looking to gain clarity as an emerging leader or give back through mentoring others, the IML mentoring program offers a meaningful way to invest in leadership that lasts.
