5 Strategies to Stay Ahead in 2025

by Dr. Michelle Gibbings CPMgr CMgr FIML

As 2025 approaches, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on the year gone by, and look ahead with intention. Whether you’re finishing a year of success or challenge, now is the moment to think about how to make 2025 your best year yet.

So, here are five strategies to help you get ahead.

Strategy 1: Find your Why

Start by clarifying your purpose. Knowing why you do what you do keeps you grounded and focused, helping you navigate obstacles and stay on track. Your purpose is what will drive you through 2025. Finding your core purpose isn’t simple, nor is it overly complex. It takes effort, time, and acceptance that there’s no magic formula for discovering it.

People discover their core purpose in different ways. Some people do it through study, experimentation, and trying new things. For others, it involves helping others, taking risks, or venturing into the unknown.

John Coleman, the author of HBR Guide to Crafting Your Purpose, writes, “Success without significance — which I define as purpose, service, and meaningful relationships — is not really success at all”.
Having a purpose doesn’t eradicate challenges, but it does provide the strength and determination to keep going despite roadblocks

Strategy 2: Balance Aspirations and Realism

It’s common to be told to set big, audacious goals — goals that push you beyond your limits. Yet, as you set goals for 2025, it’s crucial to balance aspiration with realism. Setting overly ambitious goals without acknowledging limitations can lead to unnecessary stress. The key is being open to challenging yourself but in a way that’s balanced with realistic expectations.

A recent study found a gap between perceived intelligence and actual cognitive ability, illustrating that self-assessments can often be inaccurate. The Dunning-Kruger effect also suggests that those with limited skills in a specific area may overestimate their abilities.

Be open to challenging how you assess your capabilities with genuine feedback. Doing so will help you set goals that stretch you in a healthy way.

Strategy 3: Pay Attention to What Matters

We are often told not to sweat the small stuff, and I agree with Richard Carlson, who wrote the bestselling book Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff. Perspective matters, and there are things that simply don’t matter. However, some things do matter. For example, getting enough sleep, listening carefully to others, and ensuring that you don’t make careless errors in job applications.

Take time to decide what matters most to you in 2025. When you’ve identified your priorities, you can wisely focus your attention and avoid unnecessary distractions.

Strategy 4: Reject Fomo

The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) can be a curse that distracts you from what really matters. When you know what’s important to you, it becomes much easier to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

In business, many leaders are seduced by the latest management trends or fads. These can seem exciting and innovative but often don’t deliver the promised results. Take, for instance, ANZ’s attempt to roll out agile across the organisation, which was a much-hyped strategy that didn’t have the expected success.

As a leader, it’s important to stay focused, learn, and be open to new ideas while avoiding getting caught up in the latest management buzzwords.

Strategy 5: Find Time for Mindlessness

Amid the hustle and bustle of life, it’s important to make space for mindlessness. This doesn’t mean shutting down your brain entirely, but rather allowing time for play, exploration, and creativity. Sometimes, letting your mind wander can foster creativity, problem-solving, and even reduce stress.

Research shows that mind wandering can help consolidate memories, which is essential for learning and well-being. There are times when focusing too intensely on tasks can increase mistakes. Sometimes, we need to allow automaticity to take over and give ourselves the mental space to relax and reset.

So, in 2025, be intentional about finding time to dream, wander, and explore.
