Facilitated learning

Module 1: Setting the scene
Explore what good leadership looks like, from the importance of trust to credibility and values alignment. This session unpacks concepts such as accidental managers, intentional leadership and moving from being a mate to a manager.

Module 2: Where the rubber hits the road
Being a great leader means knowing how to manage yourself, as this has a major effect on the team. You’ll learn the best approach to time management, how to build credibility and trust by keeping promises, and more.

Module 3: Communication is key
You’ve mastered self-awareness, now it’s time to apply what you’ve learnt to how you communicate. People listen to great leaders because they speak clearly and with intention. Become an expert communicator and learn the basics of why psychological safety matters.

Module 4: High impact teams
Learn how to motivate and engage your staff to build a high performing team. As you focus on team management in this module, you’ll also use your DiSC profiling pre-work personality profiling to learn how to best interact with individual team members.

Module 5: The tough stuff
People are complicated. When things aren’t going right, managing someone’s performance or behaviour is hard. This module equips you with practical skills for difficult situations so you can have tough conversations and influence better future behaviour. You’ll utilise a model you can use to deal with barriers, roadblocks and difficult behaviours straight away.

Module 6: Put your learning into practice
Now we bring all the leadership skills training together. With the knowledge and practical tools to transform how you lead, this module is an opportunity to reflect and apply everything you have learnt. This will look different for each person, empowering behavioural change and immediate day-to-day improvements.

Coaching

One-on-one coaching sessions with your facilitator provide valuable insights, personalisation, and goal setting. These sessions take place after Module 2 and 5 to effectively apply key learning points and leadership frameworks.

Line manager involvement

To drive accountability, interviews and feedback sessions are completed after every module. This is an essential part of the journey to ensure successful and enduring outcomes.

FAQs

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes, you will receive a certificate upon course completion. If eligible, you can also complete the assessment to become a Certified Practising Manager.

What time do the sessions start and finish?

Facilitated sessions usually run from 9:00am to roughly 5:00pm AEST, with breaks for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. To accommodate any New Zealand based participants, some virtual sessions may run from 8:00am to 4:00pm AEST.

What is the time commitment of the tasks and activities required between sessions?

This is flexible, however participants that get the most out of this course complete between 1–3 hours of “homework” each fortnight before the next facilitated session. This may include articles, videos and webinars from the online Learning Portal, as well as applying new skills and tools in the workplace. An important part of this work is reflecting on what you’ve learnt and bringing it to your next session.

What industry backgrounds is this program suitable for?

The content in this leadership skills training course is not industry specific. Previous participants come from all walks of life and all industries. This ranges from healthcare to retail, agriculture to government, construction to IT and professional services. With over 80 years of experience supporting managers and leaders, we know the universal challenges faced across various industries.

Do you offer Executive Coaching packages?

Yes. Our Executive Coaching packages typically come in a series of six sessions and are available 1:1 or in a group format. Get in touch to learn more about executive coaching for yourself or your organisation.

How much involvement is the participant’s line manager expected to have?

Participants and employers enjoy higher return on investment when the line manager is invested and involved. Before the course begins, managers are asked to reflect on their employees' characteristics and styles by completing diagnostic surveys. After each face-to-face session the line manager will receive an email updating them on topics covered, articles and key learnings. For maximum impact, we encourage line managers to engage with the participants about their key learnings and development plan.

What are CPD credits?

CPD stands for Continuous Professional Development. It involves engaging in activities and learning experiences that enhance your professional skills, knowledge, and competencies over time. This can include formal education, training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, and self-directed learning.

IML ANZ offers a formal accreditation, known as Certified Practising Manager. Undertaking yearly CPD is compulsory to retain and maintain CPMgr accreditation. Certified Practising Managers are required to obtain a minimum of 48 credits per 2-year period (which equates to 48 hours of professional development or 2 hours per month).

All our short courses, leadership courses, webinars, and events carry CPD credit points that must be logged within your CPD Portal profile. These points can also be obtained by attending other conferences and courses, L&D activities, and other informal ways of learning.

I have booked into the course. What happens next?

You will receive a note and calendar invitations for your course at least 2 weeks before your first day. A critical step before your first sessions is nominating colleagues to complete your diagnostic surveys, as well as completing these yourself. We may also send you learning materials from our online portal at this stage.
