Out of Office: The Whitsundays and Tasmania

International student and IML ANZ Affiliate Member, Jonathan Borreani, reckons living on foreign soil makes being a tourist in your own backyard all the more exciting.

Q: As an international student in Australia, what do you think is the best thing about visiting new places?

A: I like the unknown. When I’m in a new environment, my senses feel more awake. It helps me to observe, to listen and to try new things. Getting out of my comfort zone is always good for me.

Q: Where did you go on your most recent holiday?

A: In February 2020, my sister came to visit me from France. She wanted to come over after seeing a photo of Whitehaven Beach. So we went on a trip to the Whitsundays and then after that spent a week in Tasmania as well. While in the Whitsundays, we took boat tours and also took the aeroplane sightseeing ride. It was great to see the famous Heart Reef from above. We travelled around Tasmania starting and finishing the trip in Hobart.

Q: Why do you think it’s essential to switch off while on holidays?

A: While completing my MBA, I noticed that switching off is what I needed. Having breaks has been beneficial to me because I’m a lot more productive and creative after coming back. Even small breaks help me too. When I complete my assignments for my study, I like to work on a draft first, take a break from it and then come back later. I feel I am a lot more efficient and creative when I work this way.

Q: How do you hold on to that feeling of being on holiday?

A: Going on holidays isn’t really enough for me to feel refreshed. I used to be a swimmer at a national level. I know that my mind and body work together and are very connected. When our body is tired, our mind gets tired too. So having a good lifestyle, staying healthy is key for me. Swimming and cycling help keep my stress levels low. Right now, I’m not too busy as I am looking for work, so I also try to do some volunteering. Giving my time to help others makes me happy because I can see others feeling happy too.
