Leadership workshops to help businesses create mentally healthy workplaces

HOW TO TURN GOOD INTENTIONS INTO ACTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO WORKPLACE MENTAL HEALTH.

The Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML) has announced an 18-location workshop series in conjunction with beyondblue. The series – called Leadership Outlook – will focus on creating mentally healthy workplaces and educating employers on how to take specific steps that will positively affect their bottom line and help attract and retain the best staff.

Australian workplaces can play a crucial role in creating positive environments that help people thrive and even prevent mental health issues. One in five employees is likely to be dealing with a mental health condition. Yet beyondblue research has found that despite 91% of employees in Australia believing workplace mental health is important, only 52% believe their workplace is mentally healthy.

“Creating mentally healthy workplaces is finally becoming recognised as a crucial factor in the modern business environment,” said IML Chief Executive, David Pich FIML. “The Institute believes that a mentally healthy environment should be the baseline requirement for a workplace and Australian businesses of all sizes need to ensure that they support their staff and promote discussion around mental health. In addition, companies must have strategies in place to address mental health issues.”

IML’s Leadership Outlook series will provide strategies to develop a workplace mental health plan and introduce beyondblue’s Heads Up website and other resources which can guide a progressive approach to creating a mentally healthy workplace.

The interactive two-hour sessions will highlight evidence-based practical approaches including minimising risks, promoting positive mental health and supporting those with mental health conditions. During each session, a panel of local leaders will also share their experiences of workplace mental health.

‘‘A shift is occurring in the mindset of business leaders. We are finding more employers agree that the mental health of their workforce is fundamental to their culture, productivity and success, but many aren’t quite sure how to turn this commitment into action.” beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman FIML said.

“The 2018 Leadership Outlook workshops will give leaders and managers the ‘how to’ and the ‘what to do’, plus the confidence to begin the rewarding journey of creating mentally healthy workplaces. We know they want to, and beyondblue can help make it happen.”
