Leadership Matters: February introduction from Marie-Louise Pearson OAM FIML, Chair of the Board

Welcome to Leadership Matters for February. 2022 has kicked off with the spotlight on people for most organisations. The much publicised ‘Great Resignation’ or more accurately described in Australia as the ‘Great Re-alignment’, has focussed managers and leaders on prioritising strategies to engage, motivate, and lead their people.

The buoyant economy, rising inflation, and low unemployment rate has created the perfect storm for an employee’s market. The pressure is on employers, and therefore managers and leaders in these organisations to increase staff engagement and motivation to retain their top talent. This task is made more complicated with a weary workforce, having worked from home during the COVID pandemic, now less willing to travel into offices every day and preferring a hybrid working arrangement.

IML ANZ’s own research presented in the IML Talent Acquisition Guide dissects the primary drivers of voluntary turnover and details several strategies managers and leaders could adopt to start turning staff attrition into attraction. Please request a copy from our Membership team if you’re interested to learn more.

This February edition of Leadership Matters strives to provide a range of interesting content to support you through this tricky period.

A feature piece is the ‘My View’ article which hears from 4 Chartered Managers about their different perspectives on leading people through challenging times. It also delves into the role that trust plays in building teamwork and workforce engagement in the article titled The role of trust in creating a thriving team culture.

We are pleased to also feature an interview with our new IML ANZ CEO Sam Bell FIML. He discusses his insights on leadership and his vision for the Institute.

While there are challenges for all of us, there’s also a huge amount to be positive about and thankful for. It’s a great test for a workplace leader to energise and engage their staff, keeping them committed to your vision, mission, and purpose. I hope some of the readings in this edition inspire you.

Please connect with the IML ANZ team and let us know what you need from us. We would love your feedback.

Be your best,
